Gearing Up for the Exam explores the experiences of students facing their first State examination, the Junior Certificate exam. It examines the extent to which student experiences of teaching and learning are coloured by the presence of a formal exam, and explores the student and school factors which contribute to academic performance.
In the course of third year, students have to make choices about the programmes and subjects they will take at senior cycle level. The book explores the kinds of information and advice students rely on in making these choices and looks at their initial entry into senior cycle. The book is the third in a series about the lives of young people as they move through the schooling system. It should be of interest to principals, teachers, guidance counsellors, policy-makers and parents.
